Althea Receives Manufacturing Contract From National Institutes of Health

SAN DIEGO – April 15, 2003 – Althea Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of gene-based manufacturing and testing services to accelerate drug development, announced today that it has received a four-year contract from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to assist the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) with the development, scale-up and production of candidate vaccines, as well as to perform the necessary characterization tests required for release of vaccines for clinical use.

“We appreciate the confidence the NIH has shown in Althea and our capabilities to manufacture vaccines, and are honored to be part of this important effort,” stated Dr. Magda Marquet, Co-President and Co-Chief Executive Officer, and Principal Investigator on the contract. “We believe our broad experience in both manufacturing and characterization testing will provide an excellent resource to organizations contracting for those services with the NIAID. We look forward to assisting the NIAID with its mission to discover ways to treat and prevent disease through collaborations with research institutes and private organizations.”

With over 1,000 vaccines in research and development worldwide for infectious diseases, cancer and other diseases, vaccines have become the fastest growing segment of the pharmaceutical industry.

“The timing of this award is terrific as we move into our new 30,000 square foot facility,” stated Rick Hancock, Senior Vice President of Operations. “We will have significantly greater capability to manufacture a variety of DNA and protein vaccines in a cGMP environment. We have also added the capability to formulate and fill clinical products in either syringes or vials. We look forward to supporting the NIAID’s vaccine production program.”
